07: Yearning

The only thing that broke the silence was the sound of forks lightly clanking against the fine china. If the silence were comfortable, it would have been bearable. Except it was painfully awkward and everyone felt it, but no one was brave enough to break it.

As Ishani brought the final bite of her entree to her lips, she noticed that everyone else at the table had tennis eyes. Bouncing between she and Astrid; not bothering to be subtle.

Astrid was fighting with every fiber of her being to leave the table; to take Ishani and go back home.

To go anywhere as long as it was with her.

The last time she was in this room was the eve of her seventeenth birthday. The day that everything went to hell.

“So, Miss Singh, you are also a university student?” Alexandrianna decided to take things into her own hands since no one else seemed to initiate conversation unless it was to ask for salt.

Ishani took a sip of her ice water before turning her body more to the queen.

“Yes, I am. That’s how Astrid and I met actually.”

“And what do you study?”

Ishani furrowed her brows at the queen’s question. A surprised huff escaped before she could stop it, leading to ever fork in the room freezing.

“I mean no offense, Your Majesty,” Astrid tried to force her pride in Ishani down, but some escaped in the form of a smile, “but I highly doubt I would be staying in the palace, let alone eating at your table if you hadn’t done a thorough background check on me. Therefore, I am more than confident that you know what I am studying. But for the sake of those who don’t know, I am pursuing a degree in political science with a concentration in international affairs.”

Alexandrianna placed down her wine glass and tilted her head to the side as she looked at Ishani. Her expression and posture showed that she was not insulted by anything said, but rather amused. It struck a place in Alexandrianna that had not been uncovered in many years.

“Your mother had me followed Henrick! She sent men to my school, my home, my bloody friends! And had the audacity to ask me what my middle name is?!”

“Ana-”

“Do not Ana me! I swear that woman has it out for me!”

“And yet you answered every one of her questions,” Henrick wrapped his arms around his wife’s waist and drew her into his embrace as he leaned against his desk.

“Because if I hadn’t, she would have said some awful thing about me,” Alexandrianna placed her forehead on Henrick’s bare chest with a grumble.

“What could she possibly say that would be so awful? That she likes you?”

Her head snapped up and revealed her expression of wide eyes and a horrified expression.

“Can you imagine what would happen if your mother and I got along?!”

A smile broke across the queen’s mouth and a brilliant laugh escaped her lips.

“I had a feeling that I would like you Miss Singh,” Alexandrianna raised her glass in a silent toast to Ishani.
